The Establishment of Scotland Yard
Scotland Yard was established in 1829 by Sir Robert Peel, the then Home Secretary. It was originally located at 4 Whitehall Place, which was then part of the parish of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. The name "Scotland Yard" comes from the Scottish Kings who had a palace on the site of the current building.
The Modern Scotland Yard
The current Scotland Yard building was designed by Norman Shaw and constructed between 1887 and 1906. It is a Grade II listed building and is considered a major architectural landmark in London.

The Metropolitan Police is one of the largest and most respected police forces in the world. It employs over 30,000 officers and staff and is responsible for policing an area of over 600 square miles, with a population of over 8 million people.
