Chelsea Manning: Whistleblower and Activist

Early Life and Military Service

Chelsea Elizabeth Manning was born Bradley Edward Manning on December 17, 1987, in Crescent, Oklahoma. She served as a United States Army intelligence analyst, where she was stationed in Iraq from 2009 to 2010.

Whistleblowing and Wikileaks

While serving in Iraq, Manning leaked hundreds of thousands of military and diplomatic records to the website WikiLeaks in 2010. These documents included the Afghan War Diaries, the Iraq War Logs, and diplomatic cables from US embassies around the world.

Manning's actions were controversial and she was arrested in 2010. She was convicted in 2013 of charges including espionage, and sentenced to 35 years in prison.

Activism and Post-Conviction

Manning's imprisonment sparked global protests and campaigns for her release. In 2017, President Barack Obama commuted her sentence, and she was released after serving seven years in prison.

Since her release, Manning has become an outspoken activist for transgender rights, government transparency, and whistleblower protection. She has worked with organizations such as the National Whistleblower Center and the Courage Foundation.
